TO THE 24RD ANNUAL PIGEON KEY ART FESTIVAL Held as a fundraiser for the tiny historic island called Pigeon Key in the tropical Florida Keys, this two-day juried event attracts exemplary artists and quality buyers from across the globe.  The festival takes place February 3 & 4 at the Marathon Community Park, MM49, Marathon FL. and offers more than 70 fine artists and craftsmen, delicious local cuisine, live art and auction by preeminent celebrity marine life artist, Wyland. Enjoy historical elements, entertainment, children’s activities and educational programming highlighting the Pigeon Key Foundation’s important preservation, research and marine biology projects. We hope you’ll make plans to join us in this celebration of art, history and community. Admission is only $7 for both days (and no charge for kids 12 and under). ICONIC ISLAND & BRIDGE POPULAR SUBJECT Artists   flock   to   the   island   from   around   the   world   to capture    the    beauty    and    tranquility    through    brush strokes   and   lenses,   so   it   was   only   fitting   to   create   a festival     around     this.     23     years     later     this     event continues    to    evolve,    offering    many    artists    with    a variety    of    creative    disciplines    the    opportunity    to showcase   their   original   works   for   you   to   purchase   and admire for years to come. HISTORY

PIGEON KEY ESTABLISHED IN 1908 Pigeon   Key   is   a   five-acre   island   located   2.3   miles   west of   Marathon.   It   is   connected   to   the   mainland   by   a bridge   originally   built   by   Henry   Flagler   for   his   Florida East   Coast   Railway.   From   1908   to   1935,   Pigeon   Key served    as    a    construction    and    maintenance    base camp. In   1992,   the   Pigeon   Key   Foundation   was   formed   as   a joint       venture       between       the       Monroe       County Environmental    Education    Task    Force    and    the    Mote Marine   Laboratory   of   Sarasota,   Florida,   and   a   30-year lease      was      granted.      Currently      the      Pigeon      Key Foundation   is   restoring   the   historic   island,   operating   a museum,    conducting    guided    tours    and    providing    a center   for   marine   science   research   and   education.   All funds     raised     during     the     festival     go     directly     to furthering   the   efforts   of   the   not-for-profit   Pigeon   Key Foundation.  Learn more about Pigeon Key

THE ISLAND IS THE CLASSROOM Nestled     in     the     heart     of     the     Florida     Keys,     and accessible   by   ferry   boat,   The   Pigeon   Key   Foundation operates    a    Marine    Science    Center    (PKFMSC)    on    its private   five-acre   island.   The   center   gravitates   towards hands-on       learning,       turning       the       island       and surrounding ecosystem into the classroom. Students    are    provided    with    a    pivotal,    one-of-a-kind experience   that   will   be   invaluable   to   them   the   rest   of their   lives.   For   over   25   years,   PKFMSC   has   provided private,    customized    programs    to    more    than    30,000 participants       from       more       than       1,000       schools throughout   the   United   States.   Programs   are   tailored for        all        ages—elementary        school        to        post graduate—and   are   designed   and   endorsed   by   some of    the    most    respected    marine    scientists    in    the    US.      Learn more about Pigeon Key

Q:   How   do   we   get   to   the   island,   Pigeon   Key,   for   the show? A:    You    don’t!    The    Festival    was    moved    to    Marathon Community   Park   several   years   ago   when   the   ramp leading     to     the     island     became     unstable.     We     do, however,   encourage   you   to   visit   the   island   by   taking one   of   our   tours.   Your   Art   Festival   admission   entiitles you   to   one   half   price   ticket   on   our   daily   ferry.   For more info visit www.pigeonkey.net . (restrictions apply) Q: Is this a family-friendly event? A:   Yes.   Kids   12   and   under   are   free   so   bring   the   whole family. There will be a little something for everyone. Q: What kind of activities will there be for kids? A:     Expect     several     hands-on     exhibits     like     the marine         touch         tank,         fun         learning opportunities    and    art    creation    stations. Activities   by   Dolphin   Research   Center,   The Turtle      Hospital,      Marathon      Wild      Bird Center   @   Crane   Point   Hammock,   Florida Keys    Aquarium    Encounters,    Florida    Keys Community     College;     and     of     course     the Wyland   Foundation,   to   neame   a   few.   It's   a   great time to be a Pigeon Key Kid! Q: Will there be entertainment? A:   Each   day   will   have   a   full   schedule   of   educational talks   and   historical   information   along   with   painting demonstration   and   live   art.   Of   course   don’t   miss   the Wyland   drawing   live   daily   at   11   am   and   2   pm   with your   chance   to   bid   on   his   one-of-a-kind   art.   We   also have   the   Beatlemaniax   in   concert   Saturday   evening after   the   booths   close.   It’s   free   with   your   admission   to the    festival!    Lawn    chairs    and    blankets    allowed.    No outside food/drink, please Q: Where should we park? A:   Free   parking   is   available   but   somewhat   limited   at the     park.     There     will     be     free     parking     at     Switlik Elementary   in   the   east   end   of   the   school   parking   lot which    can    be    accessed    only    from    35th    street    gulf. There    are    some    ‘paid’    lots    but    they    are    in    no    way associated   with   Pigeon   Key   and   we   receive   none   of those funds. Q: Will there be food? A:    Yes,    of    course.    We    have    Greek,    funnel    cakes, lemonade,   hot   dogs   and   island   fare.   Who   knows   what this   year   will   bring   but   you   can   expect   it   to   be   fres   and good. Q: Will there be adult beverages? A:   Yes.   Our   beer   and   wine   garden   in   2017   featured   a variety   from   Stiegl   Brewing,   Florida   Keys   Brewing   and several varieties of wine. Q: Will I need cash? A:    Entry    into    the    festival,    auction    tickets    and    the concessions   will   be   cash   only.   Many   of   the   artists   will take   credit   cards   but   bring   plenty   of   funds   just   in   case. There   will   be   an   ATM   onsite   courtesy   of   First   State Bank. Q: Can I bring my dog? A:   Sorry   but   pets   are   not   allowed   at   the   park   during special events. This is a park rule.

LODGING

Marathon    is    a    10-mile-long    family-oriented    island community   conveniently   situated   in   the   middle   of   the Keys   island   chain,   comprised   mainly   of   Vaca   Key,   Fat Deer Key and Grassy Key. Residents,    snowbirds    and    visitors    enjoy    Marathon's fishing    heritage,    an    old-Keys    lifestyle    and    seafaring traditions,      a      theme      celebrated      in      the      area's accommodations,   such   as   private   waterfront   vacation homes,    small    hotels,    beachside    inns    and    tropical, family-style   resorts;   and   annual   seafood   festivals   and waterside   restaurants   that   harvest   fresh   fish,   lobster and stone crab claws from local waters. ARTISTS/VENDORS

Q: What kind of artists/vendors do you accept? A:   Here’s   what   we   don’t   accept:   Any   buy/sell   or   mass produced   merchandise;   items   not   wholly   made   by   the artist;      general      vendors      who      are      not      artists, fundraising   groups.   We   offer   a   limited   number   of   food booths    at    our    discretion.    Reenactors,    story    tellers, period    entertainment,    free    kid’s    activities,    marine exhibits,   etc.   will   all   be   considered   on   a   case   basis   if it’s   deemed   to   enhance   the   event   and   may   be   offered space at no charge. Q: How does an artist get into the show? A:    Review    the    guidelines    here .    Basically    each    artist submits   an   application,   jury   fee,   booth   space   fees   and digital    photos    of    their    work.    A    jury    decides    who    is accepted based on quality and balance of the show.
